Laboring on the River

If you've gone over the Calvin Coolidge bridge going towards Hadley, you've probably seen this sign for the Sportsman's Marina.

I bought my kayak there a couple years ago, friendly people, good advice, good price.

We decided to go hit the river for the afternoon on Labor Day. I had my kayak, but Kelly didn't, so we came back here for a rental. For $35 you can rent a kayak for the whole afternoon.

There's a rental counter by the river, where you pay this nice lady.

Then proceed to the water's edge and take command of your vessel.

We pushed off and headed north under the Rail Trail bridge, to go around Elwell Island. One side of the island is very peaceful, too shallow for the motor boats to use.

Then you round the north end of the island, and your in motorboat country. Jet Skis, water skiers, boats big enough and fast enough to travel to Europe. On a holiday weekend there's no avoiding it. It's not really that bad for kayaking though, but it's important to stay near the sides of the river and watch for waves. Eventually you will get wet. Count on it. Good fun.

We turned right around the north side, then headed back down south and passed our starting point. Passing back under the Coolidge bridge there were some ducks chillin' by the support pylons. There's always lots of birds flying around the river, today we saw a Blue Heron and a couple Kingfishers, I wasn't fast enough on the draw with the camera, though.

Other pylons are painted with logos from the various college crews that use the dock at the Elwell conservation area.

Sometimes in the spring the river flows high enough to cover the 'Smith' logo.

Down in this area the river widens considerably and there are beaches along the shore. Lots of people pull up their boats, pitch tents and awnings, and hang out on the beaches.

We had plenty of time left, and we brought a couple of folding chairs and a small cooler. So we set up, had lunch, a swim, then just relaxed.

It was a good unofficial end to the summer. I said unofficial.

This is cool. I'll promote it on my site tomorrow.
